About History of the Waterford Township Historical Society

The Waterford Township Historical and Preservation Society is housed at 4490 Hatchery Road in Fish Hatchery Park. Formed in 1975, the group met in the historic church, built in 1869, on Andersonville Road. One of their first projects was to have the section of Andersonville Road from Dixie Highway to the railroad tracks designated as the Historic District of Waterford. They were inactive from 1980 until September 1990. In 1991, the first active year, new by-laws were written, dues were collected and an election was held. We started with 10 members. As of January 2000, we have over 160 members. On site we now have the Hatchery House, a log cabin, a playhouse from Blain Island, and a 1950's Grand Trunk Caboose. The Hatchery House has been restored in 1919-1921 décor and is used as a museum, library, and office with a workroom upstairs for accessioning and storage. The log cabin was saved from demolition and moved to the Hatchery House site in 1994. It is also a museum, meeting place, and a store selling items pertaining to the history of Waterford. The playhouse was moved to our site in 1997 and has antique toys on display. The Caboose was moved to our site in July 1999 and restored over the winter to be used as a railroad museum.
